Duart Castle

This trip will leave the pontoon at Dunstaffnage and go across via Lismore Lighthouse to the shores of Mull where Duart Castle sits high on the rocks overlooking the seas it guards. Loch Linne, Loch Etive and the Firth of Lorne as it meets the Sound of Mull.

Duart Castle is the stronghold of the clan McLean. It has been featured in many films, to name but a few - 1945, I Know Where I'm Going, then 1971, When Eight Bells Toll. It also featured in Entrapment in 1999.

The castle dates back to the 13th century. In 1691 the castle was demolished and lay in ruins for many years until the Mcleans bought it back and restored it to its present state.

The walls on the landward side, which were more vunerable, are 29 feet (9m) high and 10 feet (3m) thick.
